Purpose & Intent

The Well exists to foster a healthy campus culture by offering a dedicated, alcohol-free space for students to connect, study, relax, and participate in wellness-related programs. It is designed to promote mental health, meaningful connection, and a sense of belonging for all UW–Madison students.

Who Can Use the Space
-All currently enrolled UW–Madison students are welcome.
-Groups and individuals may use the space for study, conversation, or participation in scheduled programs.

Social Education | Wisconsin Union

In 1935, the Board of Regents designated the Union as the University’s Division of Social Education. As such, it continues to have responsibility for:

-The social, recreational, and cultural welfare of the student body
-Instructing students in the importance of serving their community
-Utilizing its programs and spaces for out-of-classroom learning
The Union is based on the principle that the University of Wisconsin-Madison experience should involve learning outside of the classroom.

UW students, faculty, staff, Union members and guests eat, meet, learn and relax in the two Union locations daily—Memorial Union on the shore of beautiful Lake Mendota, and Union South in the heart of campus near Camp Randall Stadium.

What's a Hoofer?
To “hoof it” is a slang term for walking. In 1931, the name Hoofer was chosen because it evoked a sense of “getting there under your own power."

As the premier performing arts presenter at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the Wisconsin Union Theater brings extraordinary music, dance, and theater to life while serving as a learning lab for student leaders. Through the Wisconsin Union Directorate, students gain hands-on experience in artistic curation, artist services, and event promotion with mentorship from professional staff.

WUT also welcomes university departments, student organizations, and the greater Madison community, who rent our venues for performances, symposiums, graduations, and conferences. WUT also operates Campus Arts Ticketing, providing ticket sales and box office services for arts organizations and events across the UW–Madison campus community.

The idea for a theater at the Wisconsin Union emerged before the 1920s, when University President Charles Van Hise and members of the Memorial Union Building Committee envisioned the arts as integral to campus life. Porter Butts helped turn that vision into reality, using his leadership, organizational, and fundraising abilities to establish what would become the Wisconsin Union Theater (WUT).

Today, WUT’s mission is to present, promote, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation of the performing arts, especially among University of Wisconsin–Madison students. Its facilities include Shannon Hall, a 1,157-seat theater; the Play Circle, a flexible black box theater; and the Festival Room, a rehearsal and dance studio. These spaces feature professional sound and lighting systems, sprung stage floors, and exceptional acoustics.

Through a student-led committee, WUT presents a season of music, dance, theater, festivals, and other performing arts experiences. Students gain hands-on experience in artistic programming, artist services, event promotion, and production while working alongside professional staff.

WUT also serves as a gathering place for the campus and the greater Madison community, hosting graduations, lectures, conferences, and performances presented by university departments, registered student organizations, and community organizations.

WUT operates Campus Arts Ticketing (CAT), providing ticketing services for the Wisconsin Union Theater and numerous campus and community arts organizations. CAT distributes approximately 100,000 tickets annually through permanent and satellite locations.

The Wisconsin Union Theater strives to create an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for staff, students, artists, performers, and audiences. Social justice informs its decision-making, workplace practices, programming, and activities, helping WUT respond to the needs and interests of the communities it serves while continuing its longstanding tradition of connecting students, campus, and the broader community through the performing arts.
