Specifically, GEMSS will formalize the network of graduate researchers with interest in the early modern period across all scholarly disciplines and campus units while providing access to university resources as well as opportunities for individual leadership and academic networking.

Membership in the organization shall be open to regularly enrolled graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Eligibility for membership or appointed or elected student officer positions may not be limited on the basis of race, color, creed other than commitment to the beliefs of the organization, religious affiliation, national origin, ethnicity, ancestry, age, marital status or parental status, pregnancy, citizenship, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability.
