Association for Women Geoscientists-UW Madison Chapter

About

The Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) is an international organization devoted to enhancing the quality and level of participation of women in geosciences and to introduce girls and young women to geoscience careers. The AWG-UW Madison chapter has three main tenets: 1) community building 2) interdisciplinary interaction and 3) public outreach. Commuity building will occur via regular chapter meetings and focused topical discussions of issues ranging from structural barriers to women in geoscience to understanding implicit bias. Interdisciplinary intersection will be fostered via coordinating shared meetings and hosted guest speakers with groups in Geography, Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences, and Environmental Sciences, among others. Public outreach will take place in the form of regular volunteer opportunities, specifically aimed at invigorating scientific curiosity in young women, such as through classroom visits, teacher + grad student resource sharing, and participation in large events like UW Science Saturday and Wisconsin Science Fest. We welcome all graduate and undergraduate earth science students to participate in our meetings and events--including male allies!
