Running Club @ UW: Run for Fun!
The Running Club began in 1986. Our Advisor, Ron Carda, was one of the charter members! We are part of the UW Recreation and Wellbeing, Sport Clubs program and offer a unique blend of exercise and fun. Runners are welcome at any level. While some members are quite good, most of us run for enjoyment and to stay healthy.
We run
Joining the Running Club @ UW is a great way to meet other runners, learn about running, and learn more about Madison.
The recreational running team meets several times a week.
Our main weekly workout is on Wednesdays at 6 pm. It begins with some brief announcements and ends with a group abdominal exercises! The routes will always be between 3-6 miles. In the Fall & Spring, we meet at the bottom of Bascom Hill. In the winter we meet at the SHELL (attached to Camp Randall).
Thursday we meet at 5 pm at the bottom of Bascom Hill for a mid-distance run ranging from 3-6 miles.
Fridays, we meet at 5 pm at the bottom of Bascom Hill for a mid-distance run ranging from 3-6 miles.
Sundays we meet in front of Memorial Union at 3:00 pm for long runs. The distance of the long runs is variable, but they generally range from 6-8 miles.

We're a social group
Several times a year we participate in local road and trail races with an entry fee discount for club members. We also have lots of club socials – which usually involve free food!
We give back
We encourage a healthy lifestyle in our community by offering two very popular road races during the year: the Fall 15K (our charity run) and the Valentines 5K (our fundraiser). These races are primarily organized by the recreational running team but all Running Club members volunteer behind the scenes at these races and are in charge of everything from course setup, to registration, to timing.
We build resumes
Being an active member of a student organization is a great addition to a resume. Club members volunteer behind the scenes at our races, and volunteer work is key for many recruiters. Members also have the opportunity to gain leadership experience by becoming an officer for the club. Elections for these positions are held at the end of the fall semester.
Benefits of joining the running club include:
- Runs or workouts with other runners every Wednesday, Tuesday, and Sunday
- Frequent social events (free food!!)
- Discounted entry fees at several local races
- 15% discount at Movin’ Shoes
- Eligible for University Bookstore gift certificates at our end-of-the-year raffle
- Lowest membership fees of any UW club sport: $15/semester, $25/year
- Volunteer behind the scenes at the Fall 15k and Valentine’s Day 5K
